What to consider when changing branding

If you are considering changing the branding of your company, you need to carefully consider how you are going to do this. It may be that you want to change you log and / or company name and therefor your colour ways may also change. Look at a rebranding as a positive move, allowing you to consider new developments that have happened since your brand was first established, and how you can incorporate them in to your new branding.

When changing a logo or company name, be sure to change this everywhere such as on your website, stationery, social media accounts and sign written vehicles etc. You need to consider the changes you make on your website to ensure that you do not miss anything and that your customers are not confused by the changes. The changing of a logo may mean you also need to change the colours of the website, it may be worth while keeping the layout the same for a while until customers have become familiar with your new branding. This will give them confidence that you are still the same business just with a new logo. Also ensure that you make the changes throughout the site including downloadable PDF’s etc. which are often missed.

A drop in rankings

If you or your web marketing company track your website rankings then you may become aware of a sudden drop at times in some of your main key phrases. This can happen for a number of reasons and often requires some in depth investigating to find out what has caused the change.

It may be that the search engine such as Google has introduced a new part or update to their ranking algorithm with has caused your site to drop. If not, then it is possible that your competitors have up’ed their game recently leaving your trailing behind.

All rankings do go up and down daily and also can vary dependant on what device you are using, if you are logged in to a Google account, your browsing history and also your geographical location, so when comparing rankings week by week you need to ensure that the results are accurate.

Competitor analysis

Sometimes it can be frustrating to see that one of your competitors are constantly ranking above you for some of your major search phrases. It may be that they are a relatively new business or that they have no other employees and are smaller than your company, but somehow they are still able to appear above you.

Carrying out competitor analysis is very important in marketing as not only will you be able to see what they are offering their customers on the front end of the website, but if you know where to look and have the right tools, you can also see how they are competing in terms of search engine optimisation etc. It may be that they are building up a huge number of quality, relevant links that is helping them or that they have micro sites for their main products or services. With this information, you can then compare the sites and marketing to see how you may be able to improve yours.

Analysing time spent on your site

There are many different stats packages out there that will help you understand how visitors find your site and what they do when they are on it. Google Analytics is by far the most popular stats package and best of all it is free to use.

When you have your website set up on Google Analytics you can start to track the progress of a visitor through your site. You can find out how they found you, which page they landed on first and where they went from there onwards. You can also see how long they spent on one page. If you find that people are not spending very long on a page then leaving the site altogether it may be that you are attracting visitors that are looking for something you do not sell or offer or that your site is too hard for them to navigate round.

Mobile marketing – how does it work?

Mobile marketing is a great way to reach a wider audience. Not only can you reach people browsing on their computer at home but also those that use their phone or other mobile devices such as a tablet.

There are many ways to do mobile marketing. Some companies have an app created to allow the user to download it on to their mobile device. The app is often a mobile optimised version on their website. It may have limited functionality but often there is everything a mobile user is looking for and most importantly it is quick and easy to navigate round.

You can also do SMS marketing where you text your customers with details of offers and updates. This again is a great way to get instant traffic to your site but can be a little costly if sending out a large number of messages on a daily / weekly basis.

Bounce rate reviews

Bounce rates are extremely important when it comes to analysing an Adwords campaign. If a visitor clicks on your ad and visits your website and then leaves on the same page without clicking through or interacting with the website then they are counted as a bounce. The bounce rate is recorded as a percentage of the total visits, so for example, if the bounce rate is 50% then half of your visitors are leaving at this stage.

A High bounce rate (above 30-40%) can indicate a problem with your site or a problem with your keywords / adverts within Google Adwords. You need to have a look at the ads and keywords that have the highest bounce rate. Check that they are relevant to what you are selling and that they are going to the correct page within your site. It is often not advisable to send every ad through to the home page if there is a more relevant page.
